[Correspondence between John A. Broadus and P.L. Hoge] 1853 Sept. 20-21, Charlottesville. 1853.

Sept. 20. Broadus copied a letter he had written to Hoge at the direction of "the Board of Colportage" inquiring about personal differences existing between Hoge and "Bro. Woodson who has been acting as colporteur [sic]," continuing with "It is a little singular, Bro. Hoge, that living so near together, you and I have never met. I hope this may not long be the case. Can't you come to our Minister's meeting on the 5th Sunday in October? We shall be very glad to see you." On the verso, in Broadus's handwriting: "Copy of a letter to Revd. P.L. Hoge, Sept. 20, 1853." Sept. 21, Hoge replied: "Had I been present when he was about to be appointed, I should have opposed his appointment, but as he has been appointed, I shall certainly not oppose him in his work ... My distrust of his fitness for the agency assigned him by the board, is his want of discretion--he talks too much. Talking men, so my experience teaches, are rarely trustworthy men."
